Meet Sheku

Sheku (a.k.a. Bigg Shake) is a West African raised in East Palo Alto, California and
influenced by the era of music creators in his city like E-40, Tupac, Mc Hammer, Master P, CeCe Winans, Kirk Franklin, and Donnie McClurkin.  Music has always played a major part in Sheku’s life by giving him the freedom to express himself in a positive and creative way. Being true to himself and learning how to navigate through life’s journeys, Sheku feels the power of music, and his soul is at peace when immersed in tunes or rhythms. Sheku released his debut hip-hop album K.I.M. (Keep It Movin’) in 2023 as a tribute to positivity and purpose and awareness-builder for healthy living in memory of his late sister, Kim. K.I.M. was released through Survival Records, for which Sheku serves as CEO/producer. Sheku is a dedicated family man and father, a community leader (serving on the City of Sioux Falls Human Rights Commission and as VP of the local NAACP), a former USF football athlete and a current Market Account Executive at Midco.

Who should sign up for camp?

The Levitt Summer Jam Hip-Hop camp is ideal for students aged 11-14 who are passionate about hip-hop music creation, including rapping, singing, production, and dance. We welcome individuals with a strong interest in hip-hop, a collaborative spirit, creativity, and open-mindedness to new experiences.

Is there transportation provided?

Transportation is not available. Parents or guardians are responsible for transportation to and from the Levitt Jam Camp activities.

When is the final performance?

On Friday, July 19, the students from Levitt Hip-Hop Jam Camp will take the stage as a part of the Levitt Hip-Hop Series concert with a headlining artist to perform some select songs that they learn during camp. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m., and students will be asked to arrive at the Levitt Shell by 5:30 p.m. that evening to prepare for the performance. The Levitt is an outdoor concert facility in downtown Sioux Falls that hosts 50 FREE concerts for the community each year featuring a dynamic line-up of professional artists and diverse musical genres. There is open seating at the Levitt venue and no tickets are required. Audience and fans can bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the concert for free. The concert will also be live streamed on Levitt at the Falls Facebook and YouTube page as well as on www.sd.net. Artist announcements and information on the full Levitt concert season of 50 FREE concerts will be released in early May.

Are there scholarships available for tuition?

Yes! Thanks to the generosity of Levitt, Augustana University, The Promising Futures Fund, Marsh McLennan Agency, and Larry & Suzanne Fuller, camp tuition is set up as a pay-what-you-can system. The cost to run our camp is $125 per student. For families for whom this amount is a challenge, there is an option to contribute whatever tuition amount is doable, even if that amount is $0. Families who would like to support another camper are invited to make a tax-deductible donation to the Levitt.
